Re-Activating Office 2011 for Mac on my new computer I just bought a new Mac laptop and migrated all of my personal stuff (including Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac) to the new laptop via Apple Migration Assistant. Everything worked fine on my old laptop re: activation, etc. When I opened Word on my new laptop, it asked me to enter the Product Key. May 24, 2016  RMF Consulting Tuesday, May 24, 2016. I have MS Office for Mac installed on a Mac Air. It's been working OK for months but today I've had crashes in Word and Excel. I am not sure whether to uninstall and reinstall, or if there is another problem.

  1. Depending on where you bought Office 2011, you can retrieve the product key from Microsoft using the instructions on their website. If this doesn't work for you (ie. You probably don't own a legitimate copy of the program) I'm afraid you're out of luck, I believe the licensing information may be stored in the com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist file which is located in /library/preferences.

So, you have a new Mac with OSX and you’re excited to use it. But, you don’t have Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 installed on the new computer. You can find the installation disk, but how do you move the license? Believe it or not, it is actually possible to transfer Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac’s license from one machine to another – and it’s just a matter of copying a few files. So far this process has worked on every computer I have tested it on, please let me know (in the comments) if this works for you too. I’ll take you through the dead simple step-by-step process of how to do this.

Briefly: With this process, you’ll be able to effectively transfer a valid, activated license from one OS X computer to another.
Update: It appears as though .lockfiles mentioned are purely optional. If you don’t have one (as shown in the photo below), there is no need to worry. This process works the same.
Update: Also, some of these folders are hidden, to shown them in finder on MacOS Sierra and above, use the key combination of CMD + SHIFT + .

I should note too, these files and folders are named in very similar ways. It’s easy to get tripped up. Take this process slow, move through each file one at a time, not missing anything.

On the OLD Mac:

1. Click on the desktop or make sure your Mac menu is on “Finder”

2. On the Go menu, click Computer
Double-click your hard disk icon. The default name will be Macintosh HD
Open Library, and then open LaunchDaemons.
Drag com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist to an external hard disk or USB key

3. On the Go menu, click Computer.
Double-click your hard disk icon. The default name will be Macintosh HD
Open Library, and then open PrivilegedHelperTools.
Drag com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper to an external hard disk or USB key

4. On the Go menu, click Computer
Double-click your hard disk icon. The default name will be Macintosh HD
Open Library, and then open Preferences
Drag com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist to an external hard disk or USB key

On the NEW Mac:

1. Install your copy of Office 2011 on the new Mac computer
2. Click on the desktop or make sure your Mac menu is on “Finder”

3. On the Go menu, click Computer
Double-click your hard disk icon. The default name will be Macintosh HD
Open Library, and then open LaunchDaemons
Drag com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist from an external hard disk or USB key. If the file exists, replace it.

4. On the Go menu, click Computer
Double-click your hard disk icon. The default name will be Macintosh HD
Open Library, and then open PrivilegedHelperTools
Drag com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper from an external hard disk or USB key. If the file exists, replace it.

5. On the Go menu, click Computer
Double-click your hard disk icon. The default name will be Macintosh HD
Open Library, and then open Preferences
Drag com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist from an external hard disk or USB key. If the file exists, replace it.

Com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist.lockfile Mac N

You are done. Run Microsoft Office and Enjoy!
Be sure to uninstall your copy of Office 2011 off the old computer and keep the above files available in case you need to reinstall Office 2011 Mac again. If this process doesn’t work, you’re likely going to have to call Microsoft Support.

I've read dozens of threads on the Spinning Ball Syndrome with Lion and Mail. I've tried all of the suggestions and still no luck.
My case is unique, and should be simple to solve - because I never set up any mail accounts and am willing to delete ALL mail files.
Sometimes I get the spinning ball and have to force quit.
When I start the Mail app, sometimes it doesn't even appear as an app starting up, but I can use command-tab to switch apps and find it.
I would appreciate anyone's help:
Can I REMOVE ALL mail data files and start 'clean'?
Background:
Used a Mac Mini for 3+4 years as a music media station. NEVER set up any mail accounts on the machine.
Upgraded through a few OS generations up to Lion.
Bought a new Mac Mini about a week ago.
Before migrating data to the new machine, I updated all software, verified and repaired disk permissions, and ran fsck -yf in single user mode on the source.
Then I migrated the data to the new machine using migration assistant, including user settings.
Updated all software.
I've verified permissions, repaired them. Verified the hard disk. No errors. And I've removed files that were mentioned in related threads.
- Removed
/Library/Preferences/
com.apple.mail.plist
com.apple.mail.plist.lockfile
No change
- Went to
/Library/Mail/V2 (that was the only folder)
Clicked on Maildata and removed everything except for:
accountsplist
messageruleplist
No change
Please see the attached screen shot of my /Library/Mail/V2 directory. Everything looks stripped and recent.
Is there anything else I can get rid of?
Any other suggestions appreciated.
Hardware: New Mac Mini (it wasn't preloaded with Mountain Lion)
Lion v 10.7.4
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Still only 4GB RAM (Haven't had a chance yet to install new RAM)

Please repost on the correct forum, this is an iMac forum. There are forums specifically for Mac Mini users, however the answers will probably still be the same.

  • hi,
How can I get a easy way to clean all data in a database but keep all datafiles still same name and location just like a new created database?
dbca has two choice: create templet without datafile or with all datafiles but not empty datafiles.
    thanks

What version is your database? DBCA in 10gR2 allows you to create a template from an existing database using only the structure. From DBCA
From an existing database (structure only)
The template will contain structural information about the source database including database options, tablespaces, datafiles, and initialization parameters specified in the source database. User defined schemas and thier data will not be part of the created template.

  • Macbook Pro, Lion, 8Gig. I have frequent encounters with the spinning ball. Everything stops, the ball comes on, stays for several seconds, then back to life. During the episodes Safari, for example, is completely unresponsive. During the episodes, I can click on another application and switch to it.
This mac has been through several generations of OS X, and several different physical machines, using Migration Assistant at each shift.
    Any help gratefully received!

    Hey Sally,
We have an article that outlines a few troubleshooting steps if your Mac is running a bit slowly.
OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3915
If you find your Mac is running slowly, check any open applications to make sure they’re compatible with your computer. Or you may need to increase your hard disk space or repair your hard disk.
An application you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
There might not be enough free disk space on your computer’s startup disk. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any applications you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
    Hope this helps,
    David

  • Since updating to 10.8, on waking, Mail shows a spinning ball until all the accounts are synched and all mail has come in. I'm not the only one seeing the new 'feature', but no one knows how to avoid it. This never happened in 10.6 or 10.7. Is there a known fix? I've seen a suggestion to trash some plist file, but it was not one that was on my machine.

Well, WD Memo Agent would not be the problem, whatever that is. I suspect it's something for Microsoft Word. The only update from Apple for 10.4.11 was a Security Update, and it had nothing to do with Mail. But try this:
If you're using a POP mail account, go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
Restart Mail and wait for it to rebuild the index, and see if it will launch correctly. If not:
    Quit Mail.
Go to Home/Library/Preferences and remove the com.apple.mail.plist file.
Restart Mail and setup your account(s) again. Mail will find your existing mailboxes automatically and you can then see if it works properly.
If Mail crashes, copy and paste the crash report into your reply.

  • Was in Apple Mail and went to attach a photo from i photo. When I went to attach> at the application drop down > i photo> the spinning ball just kept spinning and I could not open it. Have the 20 inch 2.0 GHZ imac aluminum. Also just installed the imac update. What is causing it and the cure if there is one.

There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

  • Hi I am trying to import photos into iPhoto using two Panasonic cameras both Lumix (DMC TZ3 and DMC FZ30). Worked in the past no problem, I upgrade system when prompted and am running Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 9.1.5. When I attach cable from camera to Mac with the DMC TZ3 I get the spinning ball and nothing else and have to force quite and restart to access iphoto again without the spinning ball, with the DMC FZ30, when I plus in the cable I get an icon on the desktop and can go into iphoto and import the photos that way. When the photos have been imported I get the spinning ball again and have to restart the Mac to access iphoto without the spinning ball. Photos do import though.
Can anyone help, a really stupid, non-techie person who has no idea what she is doing, please?
    Thank you

    Try use a different cable.

Enter *#7370# followed by the security code which is 12345 by default. You must have a SIM inserted for this to work I believe (been a while).
This will erase all data and restore settings to factory defaults.

  • Is it normal in Mail for the beach ball to spin simply while it is loading new messages? If so, I have a new app to dump. I hope it is just a setting I need to adjust. Thanks

Try rebuilding the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail. It can't hurt.

  • Every since I upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard the frequency of getting 'spinning beachballs' has increased dramatically. Any ideas?

320 GB hard drive with nearly 130 gb free. I have it partitioned into two. I ran disk utility to repair permissisions. It identified a bunch and reraired however at the end there was a warning that SUID could not be repaired.

  • I'm feeling stupid this morning. I'm a new user with 2011, but haven't figured out how to copy a portion of data. I can use view 2D axis system to view my data. Then I use band zoom to get to the portion I need, but for the life of me I can't get it to copy that portion. I have set flags at the beginning and end and such, but the best I get is the beginning point, a single no value point and the end point. I am not getting all the points in between the flags. Am I supposed to somehow flag all points in the zoom view? I have done a search, but can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

    Hello Robert,
This is a pretty easy and straight forward thing to do:
Put you data into the VIEW window. Then pick the BAND cursor in the toolbar (see below)
Select the 'Set Flags' icon in the VIEW windows with the data and the Band Cursor:
After you have the data selected with the FLAGS (the data points will be displayed in a thicker line style) click on the 'Copy Data Points' icon:
You will get a full copy of the data in the band, copied to a new channel in the Data Portal. In the example below I dragged the new data into both windows (not that the red data is still highlited by the flags, this it's a thicker line style).
That should answer your question, please let me know if you have additional questions,
